Dobbs Law, which focuses on Social Security Disability and civil rights law. She also continues to work on a project basis for Lexis-Nexis.

Susan Stall - Vice-President of NFP
Susan is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and the African & African American Studies, Latino & Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies Programs at Northeastern Illinois University. She is a community sociologist who is interested in the public application of sociology. In her teaching she attempts to bridge the academy and the community. In her classes, students are introduced to organizational activists, and often take urban field trips and engage in service-learning projects to better understand community-based social action. Susan is an advocate of experiential education and she is always searching for more creative ways to present research findings including: theatre, video documentaries, and photographic images.

In her research, Susan has studied a variety of forms of community-based social activism--from small town rural women to urban public housing activists. Her co-authored book, The Dignity of Resistance: Women Residents' Activism in Chicago Public Housing (2004) was adapted into a play, “A Neighborhood Fight,” by David Barr & Glenn Jeffers in 2006. Susan is always on the lookout for sociology in unusual or "strange places" -- for example, in an exploration of the social issues embedded in selected detective fiction by feminists and authors of color, and currently in examining "globalization on the ground" in Albany Park—a diverse Chicago neighborhood.

Susan lives in “south” Oak Park with her spouse, Charlie Hoch. <BACK TO TOP>

Joyce Strombeck - Secretary of NFP
Joyce Strombeck currently serves as 16th Street Theater board vice president. She’s had a lifelong interest in the creative process – its practical application in turning an idea into a viable project and also in the more traditional role of the arts in shedding light along life’s journey. Joining The 16th Street board made sense . . . a playwrights’ theater . .. good for Berwyn . . . to give artists a voice to spotlight the rich diversity in our community. . . and an invitation to our neighbors to share and celebrate our varied viewpoints.

Over the years, Joyce has worked in business, education , health care and in the arts. Currently, she works in behavioral health at MacNeal Hospital as an adjunctive therapist . “I’ve always been drawn to the beginning of things . . . when creative ideas and designing a workable structure are most critical. Projects like opening a drop-in center for parents with young children, starting up a jazz support organization with my husband, raising children and now enjoying grandchildren, promoting a fledgling international theater group, serving on the board of the Parliament for World Religions in its early stages, teaching high school kids in California and Chicago, and implementing computerized bank check processing and credit card systems in the 60’s. Artists have always played a big part in my life. We shared ideas while they honed their skills and I studied the creative process. These day for the fun of it, I’m beginning to share some of my ‘unschooled’ projects on the web – joyunfolding.com -- and through the Art House Coop of the Brooklyn Art Library. I’m also designing some workshops to invite other ‘unskilled’ folks to open to the delights on the creative path.”

Joyce received an M.A.T. degree in English & education from the University of Chicago and her undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She had postgraduate training at the Gestalt Institute of Chicago. Joyce and her husband Grant raised their daughters in the Berwyn area and they continue to enjoy this multi-cultural community.
